Youth and Student Movement in East Asia and Southeast Asia: From Sunflower/Umbrella Movement to #MilkteaAlliance and Beyond

The GARC hosted a one-day international conference on student and youth movement in East and Southeast Asia on April 11. Eleven scholars from 7 countries, including Italy, the United States, Taiwan, Belgium, Japan, South Korea, and the Philippines, were invited to present 10 papers. The conference aimed to promote transnational exchanges among young activists through scholarly discussions and dialogue between academic and the general public, including activists. Approximately 70 attendees were present.

The conference was divided into four sessions, each exploring the youth movements in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, China, Japan, and South Korea, and their implications for social movement practice and theory. The discussions focused on the role of Asian student movements within the context of global social movements. These young social activists were analyzed in terms of how they influence the models of Asian social movements and transnational linkages, as well as the academic and practical implications of these movements in Asia.
