Same-sex Marriage in Asia

An international workshop on “Same-Sex Marriage in Asia,” co-hosted by GARC and the NTU Women’s and Gender Research Program, was successfully held on October 27-28, 2025, bringing the event to a fruitful conclusion. The workshop gathered more than 100 participants (both in-person and online), including scholars as well as practitioners from Hong Kong, India, Japan, Nepal, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and Taiwan.

The workshop saw in-depth discussions on the impact of same-sex marriage policies on legal traditions, cultural values, and social systems in Asian countries that have legalized same-sex marriage or are taking steps to protect the rights of same-sex partners. It also examined how internal factors have shaped same-sex marriage systems in different contexts. Through interdisciplinary dialogue, the workshop deepened understanding of same-sex marriage in Asia, opening up new theoretical insights and practical pathways for future engagement.
